Born: December 22, 1807 in Bergen [Died] October 21, 1873, Christiania (now Oslo) Norwegian poet. He initially wanted to be a painter, but later, after studying hard, entered university and aspired to become a poet. A sensitive artist, he had a great debate with Wergeland, who insisted that Norway should break away from Danish culture and build its own culture, wishing for harmony and the incorporation of all noble cultures, including Denmark. As a poet, he wrote beautiful poems, but was not as wild and tough as Wergeland. He is also known for his unhappy love affair with Wergeland's sister, Camilla (who later became the female writer C. Collett). He served as a university professor for many years, but suffered from mental disorders in his later years and ended his life unhappily. His most famous collection of poems is Norges Daemering (1834), Norwegian Dawn. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
