The name of a male choir. Glee is a genre of secular choir in 18th century England. The word means "pleasure" or "diversion" and is thought to be related to musical entertainment, but is not necessarily limited to cheerful music. The Glee Club was originally a members-only choral club founded in London in 1783 with the aim of reforming the state of choral singing at the time, and was made up of amateurs and professionals. This club was a major stimulus to the amateur choral movement and promoted the subsequent development of male choral singing. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
