Kurikuma - Kurikuma

Japanese:
Kurikuma - Kurikuma
It was an ancient place name (town name) in Kuse County, Yamashiro Province, and referred to the area of Okubo and Hirono in Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture. In the entry for October of the 12th year of the reign of Emperor Nintoku in the Nihon Shoki, it is written that "a large ditch was dug in Agata, Yamashiro, to irrigate the fields," and a similar article appears in the entry for the 15th year of the reign of Empress Suiko. The book also contains records of powerful clans who bore the place names, such as "Kurikuma no Shibi Tokuma" and "Kurikuma no Muraji," suggesting that the area had been open since ancient times. In the Heian period, "Kurikuma (Maeno)no" and "Kurikumayama" appear in historical records as recreational hunting grounds, but in 882 recreational hunting was banned because it was an obstacle to agriculture. The hills in the southeast of Uji City are commonly known as Kurikumayama (Kurikomayama), and the Shinmei Shrine located there is also called "Kurikuma (Kuriko) Shinmei." This is probably a relic of the ancient Kurikuma.
