Film director. Born in Tokyo on January 8, 1912. He was involved in the left-wing student movement from his days at Mito High School, and dropped out of the Department of Aesthetics at Tokyo Imperial University in 1935 (Showa 10). In the same year, he joined JO Studios in Kyoto as an assistant director, and in 1939, after the studio was merged with Toho, he made his directorial debut with Numazu Military Academy. During World War II, he also made films to boost morale, such as Watchtower's Desperate Guard (1943), which depicts the fight of anti-Japanese guerrillas in Korea. After the war, he switched to a line of democratic enlightenment, and was highly praised for his film The Enemy of the People (1946), which denounces the corruption of the zaibatsu, and his coming-of-age film Blue Mountains (1949), based on a novel by Ishizaka Yojiro, was a huge hit. His follow-up film Until We Meet Again (1950) also received high praise. In 1950, he was targeted by the Red Purge (expulsion of leftists) for siding with the union during the Toho dispute, and so he left the company and went freelance. After "I'm Alive" in 1951, he energetically released works as a leader of the independent production movement. His film "The Tower of Himeyuri" (1953), which depicts the tragedy of the Battle of Okinawa, was shot for Toei and became a huge hit. He released many award-winning films, including "Nigorie" (1953), "There's a Spring Here" (1955), "Darkness at Noon" (1956), "Rice" (1957), and "Kiku and Isamu" (1959). His other works include "School of Echoes" (1952), "Cruel Tale of Bushido" (1963), and the two-part "River Without a Bridge" (1969-1970). His last work was "War and Youth" (1991). He passed away on November 22, 1991. He died at the age of 79.
