Greek Revival (style). Refers to the rediscovery and application of Greek style, seen primarily in neoclassical architecture from the mid-18th century onwards. The start of this movement was the publication in 1762 of The Antiquities of Athens by J. Stuart and N. Revett, based on field research. From this time onwards, a succession of artists and intellectuals began to visit Greece, and Lord Elgin brought back to England the marble sculptures from the Parthenon in Athens (the Elgin Marbles).
