An airfoil usually has a cross-sectional shape parallel to the centerline of the aircraft (Figure 9), but for swept-back or forward-swept wings, it may be cut at right angles to an oblique wing. The straight line connecting the leading and trailing edges of an airfoil is called the wing chord, and the curve connecting the leading and trailing edges through the center of the thickness is called the centerline. The ratio of the maximum thickness of the airfoil to the chord length (expressed as a percentage) is called the wing thickness ratio, and the ratio of the distance between the centerline and the chord to the chord length (expressed as a percentage) is called camber (the distance itself is sometimes called camber). …
