A technique in which a design is made by incising the skin with a sharp tool and rubbing or injecting color into the cuts. It is also called bunshin (painting), shisei (tattooing), gei (painting), etc. As a body decoration technique, bunshin is characterized by the fact that the design is maintained almost permanently. It can also be considered a body modification technique. In this case, bunshin is taken in the broad sense of inscribing the surface of the body to create a design, and tattoos are referred to as stab bunshin (painted mark bunshin) as a subcategory, and are distinguished from cicatrization or scar tattooing, which does not use color.
