The Angel of Sorrow (English: Der blaue Engel)

A German film made in 1930. Joseph von Sternberg, who had made the first Hollywood talkie, Thunderbolt (1929), was invited by Erich Pommer (1889-1966) of the German company Ufa to direct this film, and German and English versions were made at the same time. Along with female director Leontine Sagan's (1889-1974) Virgins in Uniform (1931), this film heralded the full-scale arrival of talkies in Germany and marked the end of German cinema in the Weimar era.

1930年製作のドイツ映画。ハリウッドでトーキー第1作《サンダーボルト》(1929)を撮ったジョゼフ･フォン･スタンバーグが，ドイツのウーファ社のエーリヒ･ポマー(1889‐1966)に招かれて監督，ドイツ語版と英語版が同時につくられた。女流監督レオンティーネ･ザガン(1889‐1974)の《制服の処女》(1931)などと並んでドイツのトーキーの本格的到来を告げるとともに，またワイマール時代のドイツ映画の末期を飾った作品である。
