This beetle belongs to the family Scarabaeidae in the order Coleoptera, and is known as the world's largest rhinoceros beetle (illustration). It is also known as the Hercules beetle. Its scientific name is derived from the legendary Greek hero Hercules. Large males can reach 180 mm in length, including the long horns on their thorax. Males have a black cephalothorax and yellowish brown elytra with scattered brown spots. Females lack horns, have dense brown hairs on their thorax, and wrinkled elytra with stipples.
