Poetry drama - Shigeki

A translation of "poetic drama." A play with lines in verse form. In the narrow sense, it refers to verse drama, but today it broadly includes prose drama with poetic content and emotion. Plays were originally in verse form, such as ancient Greek drama, the blank verse seen in Shakespeare's Elizabethan plays, and Alexandrin by Racine and others during the French Classical period. However, prose drama gradually increased in the modern era, and became mainstream in the 19th century, and verse drama was banished from theaters. After World War I, verse drama was reevaluated and revived due to the stagnation of modern realist theater. The British poet T. S. Eliot advocated the revival of verse drama, and put it into practice in works such as "Murder in the Cathedral" (1935) and "Cocktail Party" (1949), followed by C. Fry and others. In modern Japanese drama, there are verse dramas rich in poetic fantasy such as Kato Michio's "Nayotake" (1946), but Fukuda Tsuneari also attempted a fixed-form verse drama in "Light and Darkness" (1956) with seven stresses (strong sounds) in each line.

poetic dramaの訳語。詩（韻文）形式の台詞(せりふ)による演劇。狭義には韻文劇をさすが、今日では詩的内容と情緒をもつ散文劇をも広く含める。古代のギリシア劇をはじめ、エリザベス朝のシェークスピア劇にみられるブランク・バースblank verse、フランス古典主義時代のラシーヌらのアレクサンドランalexandrinなど、戯曲は本来韻文形式であったが、近代に入るとしだいに散文劇が増えて、19世紀には主流となり、韻文劇は劇場から追放された。第一次世界大戦後は、近代リアリズム演劇の行き詰まりから詩劇が見直され、復活をみた。イギリスの詩人T・S・エリオットは詩劇の復興を提唱し、『寺院の殺人』（1935）、『カクテル・パーティ』（1949）などで実践し、C・フライらが後を追った。日本の現代戯曲では、加藤道夫の『なよたけ』（1946）のように詩的幻想味豊かな詩劇もあるが、福田恆存(つねあり)が『明暗』（1956）で、各行に七つのストレス（強音部）を置く定型詩劇の試みを行っている。
