Grand Coulee Dam

A multipurpose dam on the Columbia River in eastern Washington State in the northwestern United States. Continuing drought in this region forced pioneers to leave their land. As a result, surveys of irrigation were conducted starting in 1904, and in 1932 the Columbia River Comprehensive Development Plan was drawn up, including the construction of large dams for flood control, irrigation, and power generation. Construction of the Grand Coulee Dam began in 1934. The Columbia River has the largest hydroelectric potential in the United States, and the plan called for the utilization of 92% of it. This dam was important in developing 27% of that potential, and was the largest generating facility in the world at the time.
