A perennial plant of the Orchidaceae family. Its Japanese name means "orchid that grows on the top of the mountain" and it grows in the sunny grasslands of high mountains from central Honshu northward. The stem is about 8-15 cm tall and completely hairless. Two (3) elliptical, sessile leaves, each about 10 cm long and 4 cm wide, grow from the base of the plant. From June to August, three or four white flowers half open in the same direction. The lip petal has a W-shaped yellow part at the base of the inner surface, and the tip is slightly concave in the center. The spur is about 4 mm long, elliptical-spherical, and narrow at the base. A species endemic to Japan, this genus is distinguished from the closely related Orchis genus by its string-like rhizomes, not bulbous, and by the fact that the adhesive bodies of the pollen masses are exposed and not enclosed in vesicles.
