Thanatos (English spelling)

In Greek mythology, he is the god of death. He is the son of Nyx, the goddess of night, and the twin brother of the sleeping Hypnos. He is depicted with wings on his shoulders. He is said to have been defeated by Hercules, who took the dead Alcestis back from the grave, and to have taken Sisyphus to the underworld and tied him up in the wrong way, so that no one could die for a while. He was finally rescued by Ares, and was able to fulfill his role as the god of death again. In mythology, he is only a minor deity with a low influence.

ギリシア神話の死神。夜の女神ニュクスの子で，眠りヒュプノスの双子の兄弟とされ，肩に翼をもつ姿で表わされる。ヘラクレスに負かされて，いったん死んだアルケスティスを墓場から奪い返されたり，シシュフォスを冥府に連れに行って，あべこべに縛られてしまい，そのためしばらくは死ぬ者がだれもいなくなり，ようやくアレスによって救出され，また死神の機能が果せるようになったとされるなど，神話のなかでは，あまり有力でない副次的神格でしかない。
