British politician and historian. He studied at Oxford University and participated in a group of scholars and writers led by the Earl of Falkland. He was elected to the Short Parliament in 1640, just before the outbreak of the Puritan Revolution, and in the Long Parliament he also took a side that criticized tyranny. However, after the presentation of the Great Protest (1641), he switched to supporting the King, and after the outbreak of war, he negotiated with Parliament as a close aide to Charles I. In 1646, seeing that the war was going against his will, he went into exile with the Crown Prince Charles (II). He became an advisor to the Crown Prince while wandering around the continent, and returned to England with the Restoration in 1660, where he was bestowed a title and took charge of national politics.

イギリスの政治家，歴史家。オックスフォード大学に学び，フォークランド伯を中心とする学者，文人の集いに参加。ピューリタン革命勃発直前の1640年短期議会に選出され，長期議会においても専制を批判する側に立ったが，〈大抗議文〉の提出(1641)を機に国王支持に転じ，開戦以後はチャールズ1世の側近として対議会交渉にあたった。46年戦局の不利をみて皇太子チャールズ(2世)を連れ亡命。大陸各地を流浪しながら皇太子の相談相手となり，60年王政復古とともに帰国し，爵位を授けられ，国政を指導した。
