inertial navigation system

...A navigation method that determines one's position based on detected acceleration, using an inertial navigation system (INS) consisting of an accelerometer that measures three-dimensional acceleration and a computer that calculates speed, distance traveled, etc. from this acceleration. Unlike conventional navigation based on celestial measurements or navigation based on radio waves from ground stations, it does not require external assistance, so it can calculate and display various navigation parameters including the current position in a short time without being affected by external factors such as bad weather or radio interference, and aircraft equipped with an inertial navigation system do not require a pilot.
