[Died] September 9, 1980. New York American director and theater critic. Graduated from Columbia University. In 1925, he joined the Theatre Guild and served as assistant stage manager. In 1931, he formed the Group Theater, which implemented the Stanislavski system of directing and introduced the works of young new playwrights such as C. Odets, W. Saroyan, and I. Shaw, and also introduced E. Kazan and others to the world. His books include "The Fervent Years" (1945, 57), a memoir of the Group Theater's activities, "Lies Like Truth" (58), and "The Naked Image" (66).
