A title for the head used in some churches in Eastern Christianity. It is equivalent to Patriarch. Currently, it is used in the Nestorian Church and the Armenian Church (neither of which belong to the Eastern Orthodox Church). The head of the Georgian Orthodox Church, which belongs to the Eastern Orthodox Church, uses the title "Catholikos, Patriarch." In ancient times, the title Catholicos was used for bishops or the head of an entire group of monasteries. In the Jacobite Church, the bishop next to the patriarch is called Mafriano.
