A former town in Nishiyatsushiro District, southern Yamanashi Prefecture. Occupying the Tokiwa River basin, a tributary of the Fuji River, and the western slope of the Tenshu mountain range, the town is cultivated in fields and produces forest products. Shimobe Onsen (simple spring, 28-34°C) in the southern part of the town is known as Takeda Shingen's secret hot spring, and is a national health resort hot spring. The town is connected by the Minobu Line, and is a base for tourists to the Fuji Five Lakes and Mt. Minobu. In September 2004, it was incorporated into Nakatomi Town and Minobu Town in Minamikoma District. Area: 130.34 ^km2 . Population: 5,314 (2003).
