A city in southern Miyagi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. The Abukuma River flows through the center of the city, which is home to the Kakuda Basin and the Abukuma Express Line. The city, located in the center of the basin, was a castle town of the Ishikawa clan during the Edo period, and many old houses, including earthen storehouse-style merchant houses, remain. Rice, strawberry and vegetable cultivation, dairy farming, and pig farming are carried out here. Since the 1960s, the city has been attracting factories, producing automobile parts, electrical equipment, textiles, and more. It also has a branch office of the National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan and a rocket development center for the National Space Development Agency of Japan (now the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency). 宮城県南部の市。1958年市制。中部を阿武隈川が流れ,角田盆地が開け,阿武隈急行線が通じる。盆地の中心にある市街は江戸時代石川氏の城下町で,土蔵造の商家など古い家並みが残る。米作,イチゴ・野菜栽培,酪農,養豚が行われる。昭和40年代より工場誘致が進み,自動車部品や電気機器,繊維などの工場が進出し,航空宇宙技術研究所の支所や,宇宙開発事業団(現宇宙航空研究開発機構)のロケット開発センターも置かれた。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。147.53km2。3万1336人(2010)。
