Krapina man

A Neanderthal unearthed in a rock shelter site about 40 km north of Zagreb, Croatia. Since 1899, it has been investigated by Yugoslav anthropologist KD Gorjanović-Kramberger. A very large number of human bone fragments have been discovered, showing advanced features such as the left and right supraorbital ridges being separated by the glabella and small mastoid processes. It dates to the Third Interglacial Period, and stone tools from the Mousterian culture have been unearthed. As the human bones excavated were finely crushed, it was assumed that the people practiced cannibalism, but this is now called into question.

クロアチアのザグレブの約40キロメートル北方にある岩陰遺跡出土のネアンデルタール人。1899年以降、ユーゴスラビアの人類学者ゴルヤノビッチ・クランベルガーK. D. Gorjanović-Krambergerによって調査された。きわめて多数の人骨破片が発見されたが、左右の眼窩(がんか)上隆起が眉間(みけん)で分離していたり、乳様突起が小さいなどの進歩的特徴がみられる。年代は第三間氷期に属し、ムスティエ文化の石器を伴出する。出土する人骨が細かく粉砕されているところから、食人風習があったと推定されたが、今日では疑問視されている。
