A type of washi paper. The name was first seen in the Shosoin documents from 760 (Tenpyo Houji 4), but in this case it is thought to have simply referred to paper cut in half, and it was only after the Muromachi period that hanshi became known as a type of washi paper. It was called hanshi because it was made from nobegami (small-sized Sugihara paper) cut in half, but in the Edo period it was made in this size from the beginning, and as its uses spread it was made into a slightly larger, more convenient size of about 25 cm in length and 35 cm in width. After the 18th century, it was produced in various feudal domains throughout the country, but the largest producers were Suo and Nagato (both in Yamaguchi Prefecture). Yanagawa hanshi from Chikugo (Fukuoka Prefecture) was known for its particularly high quality, followed by Iwakuni hanshi from Suo. These were originally made from paper mulberry, but from the end of the Edo period, Suruga-hanshi made from mitsumata began to appear, and improved versions of this became common in the Meiji period and after. Nowadays, made by machines, it is common to mix wood pulp and straw in addition to mitsumata. In addition to blank paper, commercially available products also include lined paper, with 20 sheets per sheet.
