Ripoll (English spelling)

Japanese: リポル（英語表記）Ripoll

A town in the province of Girona (Gerona) in the Catalonia region in eastern Spain. Population 9,283 (1978). Known for the Benedictine Abbey of San Juan de Ripoll (now only ruins remain). This monastery is thought to have existed as early as the 6th century, but it is difficult to say that it was founded by the Benedictine order. During the reign of Bifredo, Count of Barcelona in the second half of the 8th century, it became a mausoleum for the count's family, and was the base for the recolonization of the northern Ausona region of Girona. It reached its peak during the reign of Abbot Oliva in the first half of the 11th century, and, together with the Benedictine Abbey of Silos in Burgos, it became a cultural center on the Iberian Peninsula.
