A type of coupling that connects two shafts. It is used to connect and disconnect shafts. By placing a clutch between the prime mover shaft and the driven shaft, the driven shaft can be stopped without stopping the prime mover, making it possible to change gears or belts to change speed. With any type of clutch, the shafts can be disconnected whether they are stationary or moving. However, there are some types of clutches that can only be used when the shafts are stationary or at very low speeds, and others that can be connected while the shafts are moving. An example of the former is a dog clutch, and an example of the latter is a friction clutch.

Dog Clutch

A clutch in which a flange with interlocking pawls is attached to the end of a shaft, one of which is fixed to the shaft and the other is fitted to the shaft with a feather key, allowing it to move axially on the shaft. The stationary movable pawl is moved to engage the other pawl and rotate the shaft. Square pawls can transmit rotation in either direction, but those with triangular pawls can only transmit rotation in one direction and cannot rotate in the opposite direction.

Friction clutch

A clutch in which flanges are attached to the driving shaft and driven shaft, and the flanges are pressed against each other to transmit rotation through friction at the contact surfaces. There are plate clutches where the pressing plate is flat, cone clutches where it is cone-shaped, and rim clutches which consist of a rim. By adjusting the force used when pressing, rotation can be transmitted to the driven shaft at any desired speed. When an extremely large load is placed on the driven shaft, the friction surface slips and the driven shaft stops, which helps prevent accidents. All have the advantage of reducing shock when starting and stopping rotation. Asbestos fabric or similar is attached to the friction surface to increase friction.

Fluid clutch

A clutch that transmits rotation between two shafts via a fluid (usually oil). A sealed container is filled with oil, impellers are attached to the ends of two shafts, and the impellers are placed facing each other inside the sealed container. When one shaft is rotated, the rotation of the impeller also rotates the oil. The rotation of the oil rotates the other impeller, so rotation can be transmitted from one shaft to the other. This type of clutch has the advantages of being noise-free or vibration-free, and being able to start and stop movement relatively quickly and reliably, and is used in automobiles, etc.

Automobile Clutch

In the case of an automobile, the engine is kept running at all times, and when the car starts moving, the engine's crankshaft is connected to the shaft that rotates the wheels to move the car. The clutch is always in contact, and when the clutch pedal is pressed, the clutch is released by the action of hydraulic pressure. The frictional force of the clutch plates is adjusted depending on how hard the clutch is pressed. When the car is stopped, the relationship between these two shafts is interrupted. The speed of the car can be changed in various ways while it is moving, by changing the gears that mesh with the crankshaft and the wheels. A single-plate dry disc clutch, a type of friction clutch, is usually used for this type of power transmission. Other than this, electromagnetic clutches that use electromagnetic force and fluid clutches are also used.

2軸を連結する継手の一種。軸と軸を接続したり、接続を断ったりするのに使われる。原動機の軸と従動軸との間にクラッチを入れておくと、原動機を停止させることなく従動軸を静止させることができるので、速度を変えるために歯車を入れ替えたり、ベルトを掛け替えたりすることが可能である。どの形式のクラッチでも、軸が静止していても動いていても、軸と軸との連結を断つことができる。しかし、軸と軸とを接続する場合には静止状態か、あるいはごく低速度のときだけ可能なものと、動いているままで接続できるものとがある。前者の例はかみ合いクラッチ、後者の例は摩擦クラッチである。

かみ合いクラッチ

互いにかみ合うつめをもったフランジを軸の端に取り付け、一方は軸に固定し、他方はフェザーキーで軸にはめ、軸上を軸方向に移動できるようにしたクラッチ。静止状態で移動できるつめを動かして他方のつめをかみ合わせ、軸を回転する。角形のつめならばどちらの方向にも回転を伝えることができるが、三角形状のつめをもっているものでは一方向の回転だけが伝えられ、逆方向に回すことはできない。

摩擦クラッチ

原動軸と従動軸とにフランジを取り付け、そのフランジを互いに押し付けて接触面の摩擦により回転を伝えるクラッチ。押し付ける板が平板のものを板クラッチ、円錐(えんすい)形のものを円錐クラッチ、リムからなるリムクラッチなどがある。押し付けるときの力を加減することによって任意の速度で従動軸に回転を伝えることができる。従動軸に著しく大きな負荷がかかったときは、摩擦面が滑り従動軸は停止するので、事故防止にも役だつ。いずれも回転を断続するときに衝撃を少なくできる長所がある。摩擦面には摩擦を増すために石綿織物などを張り付ける。

流体クラッチ

流体（通常は油）を介して回転を2軸間に伝えるクラッチ。密閉した容器内に油を満たし、2軸の先端に羽根車を取り付けて、密閉容器内に羽根車を相対して入れる。一方の軸を回転させると、羽根車の回転により油も回転する。油の回転により他方の羽根車が回転するので、一方の軸から他方の軸へ回転を伝えることができる。このクラッチは騒音や振動がなく、運動の開始・停止が比較的早くかつ確実にできる長所があり、自動車などに使用されている。

自動車のクラッチ

自動車の場合は、エンジンを常時回転させておき、走り出すときにエンジンのクランク軸を、車輪を回転させる軸に接続して自動車を動かす。クラッチはつねに接触しており、クラッチペダルを踏むと油圧の作用でクラッチが離れる。クラッチの踏みぐあいでクラッチ板の摩擦力が加減される。自動車を止めるときには、この2軸内の関係を遮断する。走行中は車の速度をいろいろ変えるが、それにはクランクシャフトと車輪とのかみ合わせ歯車を変える。このような動力伝達には普通、摩擦クラッチの一種の単板乾式円板クラッチが用いられる。このほかには、電磁力を利用した電磁クラッチ、流体クラッチなども使用されている。
