Mary Pickford

American film actress. Born in Toronto, Canada. She made her stage debut at age 8 and entered the film industry at age 16. She played pretty girls and orphans in films such as "Rebecca of the Farm" and "A Little Princess" (both 1917) and "An Orphan's Life" (1919), earning her the nickname "America's Sweetheart." In 1919, she founded United Artists with Griffith, Chaplin, and Douglas Fairbanks, and contributed to the defense of the star system and film art in Hollywood. She was briefly married to Douglas, and the two co-starred in "The Taming of the Shrew" (1930). She retired after the advent of talkies, but was active on stage and radio, and published her autobiography in 1955.

アメリカの映画女優。カナダのトロント生まれ。8歳で舞台に立ち、16歳で映画界入り。『農場のレベッカ』『小公女』(ともに1917)、『孤児の生涯』(1919)など可憐(かれん)な娘や孤児を演じ、「アメリカの恋人」といわれた。1919年グリフィス、チャップリン、ダグラス・フェアバンクスらとユナイテッド・アーティスツ社を設立、ハリウッドにおけるスター・システムと映画芸術の擁護に貢献した。ダグラスとは一時結婚をし、2人の共演作に『じゃじゃ馬馴(な)らし』(1930)がある。トーキーになって引退したが、舞台・ラジオで活躍、1955年には自伝を出版した。
