A city in central eastern Colorado, USA. Population: 215,150, metropolitan area population: 316,000 (1994). Located at the eastern foot of Pikes Peak, at an elevation of 1,840m, it was founded in 1871 as Fountain Colony. It is a commercial center near the Cripple Creek gold mine, and is home to electronics and printing industries. Blessed with a mild climate and scenic spots such as Pikes Peak, it is one of the leading tourist resorts in the Rocky Mountains. It is also known as the location of NORAD and the Air Force Academy.
