?-1115? A monk from Myanmar. He came to Bagan from Thaton, the capital of the Mon (Thalaing) people, and converted King Anawrahta, the founder of the unification of Myanmar, to Southern Theravada (Hinayana) Buddhism through the esoteric teachings of monks called Ali, thus laying the foundation for the rise of Buddhism in Myanmar. As the king's teacher, he initiated King Anawrahta's conquest of Thaton (1057) in order to obtain the Tripitaka of Buddhist relics and sutras and commentaries. His teacher is said to have been Sri Rabuddhi or Adishirakara, and his monk name before coming to Bagan was Dhammadassi. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
