1711‐55 Russian geographer. Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1750). He studied at the Slavic Greek and Latin Institute in Moscow and then at the University of St. Petersburg, and from 1733 to 1743 he joined the second Kamchatka expedition led by Bering. During his Siberian surveys from 1733 to 1736 he studied under German scholars J. Gmelin and G. Müller, and from 1737 to 1741 he independently surveyed the nature and inhabitants of the Kamchatka Peninsula, and combined his findings with the research materials of the German naturalist Steller to write Opisaniye zemli Kamchatki (1755).
