Russian geographer. Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1750). He studied at the Slavic Greek and Latin Institute in Moscow and then at the University of St. Petersburg, and from 1733 to 1743 he joined the second Kamchatka expedition led by Bering. During his Siberian surveys from 1733 to 1736 he studied under German scholars J. Gmelin and G. Müller, and from 1737 to 1741 he independently surveyed the nature and inhabitants of the Kamchatka Peninsula, and combined his findings with the research materials of the German naturalist Steller to write Opisaniye zemli Kamchatki (1755).

ロシアの地理学者。ペテルブルグ科学アカデミー会員(1750)。モスクワのスラブ･ギリシア･ラテン学院，ついでペテルブルグ大学で学び，1733‐43年ベーリングを長とする第2次カムチャツカ探検隊に加わった。1733‐36年のシベリア調査では，ドイツ出身の学者グメリンJ.Gmelin，ミュラーG.Müllerに師事，37‐41年には単独でカムチャツカ半島の自然と住民を調査し，その成果とドイツ出身の博物学者シュテラーの調査資料を合わせて《カムチャツカ誌Opisanie zemli Kamchatki》(1755)を著した。
