...The name Sasanoha is said to come from the fact that the male's body shape and color resemble the leaves of bamboo grass, but it is also said to refer to the small teeth of bamboo grass. It is called by names based on its color, such as Akabera (Misaki), Aobera, Aobero, and Gomanjo (meaning young girl) (Shizuoka and Wakayama), and because it is somewhat tall, it looks short for a wrasse and has a large head, so it is also called Hachi (Kagoshima), Daikoku (Atsuta), and Hyotangizam (Hachi = 8 = Hyotan, Hiroshima). The names Moio and Mokuzu (Toyama) were given to it because it lives in places with a lot of algae.

…ササノハは，雄の体型と体色が〈ササの葉〉を思わせることに由来するともいわれるが，歯が小さいので〈細小（ささ）の歯〉を示したものともいわれる。アカベラ(三崎)，アオベラ，アオベロ，ゴマンジョウ(小女郎の意)(静岡，和歌山)など色彩からの呼名があり，また，やや体高が高いぶん，ベラとしては寸詰りに見え頭が大きく見えるところから，ハチ(鹿児島)，ダイコク(熱田)，ヒョータンギザミ(ハチ＝8＝ヒョータン，広島)などとも呼ばれる。モイオ，モクズ(富山)は藻の多いところにいるところからつけられた名である。…
