National education officials in the early Meiji period It was established in 1872 under the Ministry of Religion, which replaced the Ministry of Shintoism. It appointed Shinto priests and monks as quasi-official officials and attempted to indoctrinate the general public with Shintoism. However, the idea of religious freedom and opposition from the Buddhist community grew stronger, and it disappeared when the Ministry of Religion was abolished in 1877.
