A marine fish of the family Chaetodontidae (illustration) in the order Perciformes. The fourth spine of the dorsal fin extends like a thread, and the beautiful white fin membrane looks like a flag, hence the name. Hatatatedai is the name used around Enoshima, but it is also called Itohiki (Misaki), Kyogenbakama (Wakayama), Sambaso (Hamada), Noboridai (Tanabe), Hatatate, and Hotate (Nagasaki) in various places. The body is almost diamond-shaped, and two wide black vertical stripes on the white side of the body stand out against the yellow of the dorsal, caudal, and pectoral fins, making it a popular aquarium attraction.

スズキ目チョウチョウウオ科の海産魚（イラスト）。背びれの第4棘（きよく）が糸状にのび，その白い鰭膜（きまく）がひらひらと美しく，旗指物を立てているように見えるのでこの名がある。ハタタテダイは江の島付近の呼名だが，イトヒキ(三崎)，キョウゲンバカマ(和歌山)，サンバソウ(浜田)，ノボリダイ(田辺)，ハタタテ，ホタテ(長崎)などの呼名が各地にある。体はひし形に近く，白い体側に2条の幅広い黒色縦帯が鮮やかで，背びれ，尾びれ，胸びれなどの黄色と映えて水族館の人気者。
