Roman Emperor. Reigned 41-54. Born to Drusus and Antonia, he was overshadowed by his older brother Germanicus in his youth. Due to poor health, he rarely appeared in public life, but after the assassination of Emperor Caligula, he was recommended by the Praetorian Guard to take the throne. He was unpopular in the senate because of his interest in military and judicial issues and his favoring of freed slaves. Although he showed excellent administrative skills, his academic and difficult personality was reflected in his unpopularity in the senate. He also expanded his provinces by conquering Britannia, Mauretania, Thrace, and other territories.

ローマ皇帝。在位41‐54年。ドルススとアントニアの間に生まれ，若い頃は兄ゲルマニクスの陰に隠れて目だたなかった。病弱であったことから，公的活動の舞台に出てくることはほとんどなかったが，カリグラ帝の暗殺後，親衛隊に推されて帝位に就く。軍事･司法問題への関心や解放奴隷の重用のために元老院で不評であった。優れた行政手腕を見せたにもかかわらず学究肌で扱いにくい性格が元老院での不評に反映されている。また，ブリタニア，マウレタニア，トラキア等の征服によって属州地の拡大を実現した。
