…Born in Paris as the illegitimate son of a prostitute, he was sent to a reformatory for theft as a boy in the Morvan region of the Massif Central. He then lived a life of wandering and imprisonment while continuing to steal and engage in prostitution with homosexuals. In 1942, he published a poem, Le condamné à mort, written while serving time in Flaine prison, in Paris after his release, and was recognized by J. Cocteau. His first novel, Les Fleurs-de-lis (1944), and his second, Les Miracles des Roses (1946), both depict the world of criminals and homosexuals, but the raw and extravagant prose, which transforms the grotesqueness, filth, and evil of the author's imagination into beauty and holiness, made Genet, the "thief writer," known in the avant-garde literary world of Paris, even though they were published secretly. …
