Born on November 18, 1899. Studied Sanskrit language and literature, and in 1924 went to Germany and England to study Vedic studies. In 1942, he became a professor at Tokyo Imperial University, and later served as a professor at Keio University and director of the Toyo Bunko Library. In 1953, he became a member of the Academy of Sciences. In 1978, he was awarded the Person of Cultural Merit. He passed away on September 24, 1979. He was 79 years old. He was from Tokyo and graduated from Tokyo Imperial University. His maiden name was Fukushima. His works include "History of Sanskrit Literature," "Sanskrit Grammar," and "Essays on Vedic Studies."
