Neutra - Richard Joseph Neutra

American architect known for his contributions to the development of the International Style. Born in Vienna, he studied at the Vienna University of Technology and the University of Zurich. After working under Adolf Loos in Vienna and Mendelsohn in Berlin, he moved to the United States in 1923 and worked under F. L. Wright in Wisconsin. In 1925, he began working with fellow architect Schindler in Los Angeles, and in 1927 he created his first work, the Jardine Apartments, which used reinforced concrete. This work was selected for and exhibited in the International Style exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1932.

In 1929 he completed his best-known house, the Lovell House, and he achieved particularly outstanding results in the field of private residences. As his penchant for flat roofs indicates, he skillfully utilized simple forms with an expressive vision, carving out a unique realm of his own. The perfection of this can be seen in the von Sternberg House in 1936 and the Kaufmann House from 1946 to 1947. In later years he also undertook large-scale projects such as the American embassies in Pakistan and Karachi (1960). He died in Wuppertal, Germany.

アメリカの建築家。インターナショナル・スタイルの発展に寄与したことで知られる。ウィーンに生まれる。ウィーン工科大学、チューリヒ大学で学ぶ。ウィーンではアドルフ・ロース、ベルリンではメンデルゾーンのもとで働いたのち、1923年に渡米、ウィスコンシンのF・L・ライトのもとで仕事をした。25年にはロサンゼルスで、同郷の建築家シンドラーとともに仕事を始め、27年には第一作として強化コンクリートを用いたジャーディン・アパートを手がけた。この作品は、32年にニューヨーク近代美術館で開催された「インターナショナル・スタイル展」に選ばれ展示された。

　1929年にはもっとも知られるロベル邸を完成し、とりわけ個人住宅の分野で優れた業績を残している。陸屋根を好んで用いたことからもわかるように、彼は単純な形を表現性に富むビジョンのもとで巧みに生かし、独自の境地を切り開いた。36年のフォン・スタンバーグ邸、46～47年のカウフマン邸などにその完成度をみることができよう。後年にはパキスタンおよびカラチのアメリカ大使館（1960）のような大規模な仕事もある。ドイツのウッパータールで没。
