A former town in Akaiwa County, southeastern Okayama Prefecture. The Sanyo Main Line runs through the main settlements in the lower reaches of the Yoshii River. The town produces rice, peaches, and grapes, and also manufactures sewing and food. There is a large housing complex in the west. At the top of Kumayama in the south is the Kumayama Ruins (historic site), a site of three tiers of broken stones. In March 2005, the town merged with Sanyo Town, Akasaka Town, and Yoshii Town in Akaiwa County to become a city, Akaiwa City. 45.73 km2 . Population: 8,718 (2003). 岡山県南東部,赤磐(あかいわ)郡の旧町。吉井川下流域の主集落は山陽本線が通じる。米,モモ,ブドウを産し,縫製,食品などの工業も行う。西部に大規模な住宅団地がある。南の熊山の頂上には割石を3段に積んだ熊山遺跡(史跡)がある。2005年3月赤磐郡山陽町,赤坂町,吉井町と合併し市制,赤磐市となる。45.73km2。8718人(2003)。
