A port city in southeastern Sweden, 135 km southwest of Stockholm. Population 124,000 (1996). It is located on the banks of the Motådala River at the back of an inlet about 40 km into the Baltic Sea. A city since the 13th century, it has developed as the center of Sweden's textile industry. Other industries include paper, rubber, and shipbuilding, and the city also produces margarine and furniture. There is a castle and buildings from the 16th century, but they were damaged in the war with Russia in 1719. The city is also blessed with beautiful natural scenery.
