One of the tissues that make up the mesophyll of plant leaves. It is named after the irregular cell shape and arrangement, abundant intercellular spaces, and its resemblance to a sponge. The surface side of the mesophyll is usually made up of palisade tissue, while the underside is made up of spongy tissue, both of which are assimilation tissues made up of cells rich in chloroplasts. The intercellular spaces are connected to the outside world through stomata, and serve as a place for gas exchange during photosynthesis and respiration, as well as a passageway for these gases.
