A type of bamboo or bamboo grass of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). It is cultivated throughout the country for decorative purposes, but there are wild species in the mountains of Kyoto Prefecture. The culm is 1-1.5 meters tall, with sparse single branches emerging from each node below the middle of the stem. The culm sheath (bamboo skin) is densely covered with long, coarse, spreading hairs, and the undersides of the leaves are characterized by a lack of hairs. The leaves are linear oblong, 20-25 cm long and 4-5 cm wide, with a sharp point at the tip and a rounded base, and in winter the edges turn white and wither, creating a beautiful dark brown appearance, hence the name kumazasa.
