[Explanation] This phrase comes from the philosophy of the tea ceremony. It is based on the phrase "A once-in-a-lifetime meeting" in "Yamagami Soujiki - The Ten Forms of a Tea Ceremony Master" written by Souji, a tea master from the Azuchi-Momoyama period and a disciple of Sen no Rikyu. In the tea ceremony, it means that since it is a once-in-a-lifetime meeting, you should treat it with all your heart. Later, it came to be used as a general phrase to mean cherishing encounters with people.

[解説] 茶道の心得から来たことば。安土桃山時代の茶人で、千利休の弟子であった宗二の著「山上宗二記―茶湯者覚悟十体」にある「一期に一度の会」によっています。茶道では、一生に一度の会であるから心をこめてもてなせ、ということ。のち、人との出会いを大切にするという意の一般語として用いるようになりました。
