The fourth largest steel manufacturer in Japan. They use KOBELCO as their unified business sign. Founded in 1905 as Kobe Steel, a subsidiary of Suzuki Shoten. Became independent from Suzuki Shoten in 1911. After World War II, they built a steelworks in Nadahama, Kobe, and integrated pig steel production. They produce steel, machinery, aluminum rolling, light alloys, and copper alloys. They also enter the titanium processing, industrial robots, and semiconductors industries. They also export steel plants. Their head office is in Kobe, and their factories are in Kakogawa, Takasago, Kobe, and elsewhere. In 1995, their factories were heavily damaged in the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. In response to the merger of industry giants Nippon Kokan and Kawasaki Steel in 2002, they entered into capital and business alliances with Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Industries. In the fiscal year ending March 2009, they fell into the red due to reduced revenue and profits caused by the sudden drop in steel demand due to the 2008 global economic crisis, but they turned a profit in the fiscal year ending March 2010. In 2011, capital was 233.3 billion yen and sales were 1.8585 trillion yen.

国内４位の鉄鋼メーカー。統一営業標識としてKOBELCOを使用している。1905年鈴木商店の神戸製鋼所として創業。1911年鈴木商店から独立。第２次大戦後神戸灘浜に製鉄所を建設して銑鋼一貫化を行った。鉄鋼を中心に機械，アルミ圧延，軽合金，伸銅などを生産。チタン加工，産業用ロボット，半導体にも参入。製鉄プラント輸出も行う。本社神戸，工場加古川，高砂，神戸ほか。1995年の阪神・淡路大震災では工場などが大規模な被害を受けた。業界大手の日本鋼管と川崎製鉄が2002年経営統合したのに対抗する形で新日本製鐵，住友金属工業と資本・業務提携した。2009年３月期は，2008年の世界経済危機による鉄鋼需要急減で減収減益で赤字に転落したが，2010年３月期は黒字。2011年資本金2333億円，売上１兆8585億円。
