Pierre de Coubertin

Pierre de Coubertin

The founder of the modern Olympic Games. A Frenchman and baron. His ancestors were descended from Louis VI, Italian nobles, and courtiers of William the Conqueror. He entered the Saint-Cyr academy to become a soldier at his father's request, but rebelled against the education that was primarily aimed at revenge against Germany, and aspired to become a politician. By chance, he read "Tom Brown's Rugby School Diary" and was struck by the fact that sports were at the heart of education in British public schools, and studied the ideas of T. Arnold, who was also the principal of Rugby School. In 1886, he reported on a government-subsidized visit to the United States and recommended the importance of sports in education to the Minister of Education, but there was no concrete response and it only created opponents.

Around 1887, inspired by excavations at Olympia at that time, he came up with the idea of reviving the Olympics, which he began in 1892, and succeeded in 1894, founding the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He served as the second president of the IOC from 1896 to 1925, and thereafter served as honorary president, guiding and advising on the modern Olympic movement until his death. The details of this period are described in detail in his book "Olympic Reminiscences." During World War I, he moved to Lausanne, Switzerland, where he died.
