Kabuki Kyogen. Historical piece. Written by the first Namiki Shozo. First performed in December 1758 (8th year of the Horeki era) at the Osaka Kaku Theater. Five acts. Based on Kawamura Zuiken, a famous civil engineer and flood control expert at the time, the story is set against the backdrop of flood control on the Yodo River, and tells the story of Hanamitsu Saemon's stabbing, his seppuku, and his vassal Shinto Genpachi and his family's painstaking efforts to avenge his master's enemy. A variation of the Vengeance Kyogen. It is a huge, complex, and intricately structured play, but each scene is vivid with concise dialogue and well-drawn human figures. The play does not rely on style, but depicts people with a simple touch, appealing to the audience's emotions while turning it into a spectacular performance, and its vitality is completely different from the refined sense of today's Kabuki.
