…With the invention of this machine, the pressure mechanism became the most important part of the printing press, and the word press came to be used to refer to the printing process, printing shops, publishers, and even newspapers. For 350 years after Gutenberg's invention, the printing press saw little improvement, but at the beginning of the 19th century, Charles Stanhope (1753-1816) of England built an iron printing press and introduced a new idea to the pressure mechanism. He combined weights, levers, and a screw rod to make it possible to apply a large amount of pressure with a small amount of force. …
