Ring Nebula

A beautiful planetary nebula in the constellation Lyra (M57, NGC6720). It was named after its resemblance to a ring. Its apparent size is about 1 arcminute, and its brightness is about 9th magnitude. It is about 2,600 light years away from Earth, and its actual size is about 1 light year. Recent observations using the Subaru Telescope and other instruments have revealed that there are faint double rings outside the bright ring that appears to be a ring, indicating that mass ejection from the central star has occurred intermittently multiple times. The gas expands at a speed of about 20 kilometers per second. The ring portion has a high surface brightness and can be seen even with a small telescope, making it a popular subject for summer astronomy observation.

こと座にある美しい惑星状星雲（M57、NGC6720）。指輪の形に見えることからこの名前がついた。見かけの大きさは約1分角で、明るさは約9等である。地球からの距離は約2600光年で、実際の大きさは約1光年である。すばる望遠鏡などによる最近の観測から、指輪に見える明るいリングの外側に、淡い二重のリングがあり、中心星からの質量放出が複数回、間欠的に起こったことがわかる。ガスの膨張速度は毎秒20キロメートル程度である。リング部分は面輝度が高く、小型望遠鏡でも見えるので、夏の天体観望の好対象として親しまれている。
