? - King of Pontus, c. 160 BC. Reigned c. 185-160 BC. In 183 BC, he captured the city of Sinope on the Black Sea coast, and made it the capital of his kingdom. In an attempt to expand his territory, he fought against the neighboring kingdoms of Pergamum and Bithynia, but was forced to return the lands he had occupied due to Rome's intervention, fearing his growing power (179 BC). However, through diplomatic relations and wars with cities and small kingdoms along the Black Sea coast and in southern Russia, his policy of building a great empire was continued by Mithridates VI.
