Asama Maru Incident - Asama Maru Incident

On January 21, 1940 (Showa 15), a British warship inspected the Asama Maru, operated by Nippon Yusen Kaisha. The inspection took place 30 nautical miles off the coast of Nojimazaki, Chiba Prefecture, and as a result, 21 German passengers, who were at war with Britain, were taken away. As this occurred on the high seas, the Japanese government protested to Britain and demanded the handover of the Germans, and the incident strongly stirred up anti-British public opinion in Japan. On February 6, negotiations were concluded, and it was agreed that no military personnel from a warring country would be allowed on board in the future, and the British side handed over the nine German passengers to the Japanese side.

1940年（昭和15）1月21日、イギリス軍艦が日本郵船会社の浅間丸を臨検した事件。臨検が行われたのは、千葉県野島崎沖30海里の海上であり、その結果、イギリスと交戦中のドイツ人船客21名が連行された。公海上の事件であったので、日本政府はイギリスに抗議し、連行ドイツ人の引渡しを要求、事件は国内の反英的世論を強く刺激した。2月6日、交渉はまとまり、今後交戦国の軍籍にあるものは乗船させないこととなり、イギリス側はドイツ人船客9名を日本側に引き渡した。
