A city in the southern part of Okayama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the Takahashi River basin in the Okayama Plain, and was the center of Kibi culture with the Bitchu Kokufu and Kokubunji temples located there. Soja, the city center, developed as a town in front of the shrine of Bitchu Soja. The Hakubi Line runs through the city, and the Kibi Line and Ibara Railway branch off from it. It was once known for its traditional Bitchu medicine sales and Azo castings, but in recent years it has become one of the prefecture's leading inland industrial areas with the establishment of a spinning and auto parts industrial complex on the left bank of the Takahashi River as an extension of the Mizushima Industrial Zone, and the influx of food industries and other industries. In addition, the Okayama Expressway opened in 1996, expanding the high-speed transportation network in four directions, further increasing its importance. In agriculture, rice and vegetables are cultivated in the plains, and Fuyu persimmons, grapes, and peaches are cultivated in the Kibi Plateau. Okayama Prefectural University opened in 1993. It is home to the Tsukuriyama Tomb, the ruins of Bitchu-Kokubun-ji Temple and the ruins of the Kokubun-Ninja Temple (all historic sites), and the Gokei River (a scenic spot) with its strange cliffs and stone pillars. In March 2005, the villages of Yamate and Kiyone in Tsukubo County were incorporated. 211.90 km2 .
