...A type of colored woodblock print in which two or more (usually four to six) plates of shades of a single color or several shades of a similar color are used to create a light and dark effect. In Germany, it was made by Cranach and Burgkmair in 1507-10, and separately in Italy, Ugo da Carpi (c. 1450-c. 1527) applied for a patent in Venice in 1516. Many of the German-style prints had plates of only light and dark added to the finished image, and these were also called camaieus. ...
