A thorny evergreen tree of the family Combriaceae native to the mountains and fields of Japan; large ones can reach a height of 10 m and a diameter of 30 cm. The leaves are alternate, leathery, ovate or elliptical, 4-8 cm long, pointed at the tip, circular or wedge-shaped at the base, sawtoothed at the edge, and have 4-6 pairs of lateral veins. Dioecious, the axillary racemes are 1-2 cm long and produce many small yellow-green flowers in summer. There are 4-6 sepals. There are no petals. The male flowers have many stamens and a disk that exudes nectar.

日本の山野に自生する有刺のイイギリ科の常緑小高木で，大きなものは高さ10m，直径30cmに達する。葉は互生し，革質で卵形ないし楕円形，長さ4～8cm，先端はとがり，基部は円形または円状くさび形，ふちに鋸歯があり，側脈は4～6対。雌雄異株で，腋生（えきせい）の総状花序は長さ1～2cmで，夏に多数の小さい黄緑色の花をつける。萼（がく）片は4～6個。花弁はない。雄花には多数のおしべがあり，蜜を出す花盤がある。
