Iwashimotsuke - Iwashimotsuke

A deciduous shrub of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). It is 0.5-1 meter tall, and occasionally grows to nearly 2 meters. The branches are well-branched and have angular edges. The leaves are ovate-circular or elliptical, 1-4.5 cm long, entire except for a slight notch at the tip, and slightly white on the underside. From May to July, the new branches bear white, five-petaled flowers about 8 mm in diameter in a panicle. The fruit is a capsule. It is endemic to Japan, growing on rocky areas in the subalpine and lower alpine zones of the Chubu and Tohoku regions, and is often seen in serpentine and limestone areas. The leaf shape is varied, and the oblanceolate type is sometimes distinguished as the variant of Acanthus longifolius. The variant Acanthus longifolius, which is often planted in gardens, grows wild on rocks on riverbanks in Shikoku, and has very long and slender leaves.

バラ科（APG分類：バラ科）の落葉低木。高さ0.5～1メートル、まれに2メートル近いものもある。枝はよく分枝し、稜角(りょうかく)がある。葉は卵状円形ないし楕円(だえん)形、長さ1～4.5センチメートル、先端がわずかに切れ込むほかは全縁、裏面はやや白色を帯びる。5～7月、新枝の先に径約8ミリメートルの白色の5弁花を散房状につける。果実は袋果(たいか)。日本固有種で、中部地方から東北地方の亜高山帯から高山帯下部の岩場などに生え、蛇紋岩地域や石灰岩地域でよくみられる。葉形は変化に富み、倒披針(とうひしん)形のものを変種ナガバイワシモツケとして区別することがある。庭によく植栽される変種トサシモツケは、四国の川岸岩上に野生し、葉は非常に細長い。
